Case Study – Sydney Festival

“Prior to engaging Conexim’s services, we could never be guaranteed of uninterrupted uptime during the busiest times of the festival. After using Conexim for the first time during the 2010 festival, we had no downtime and it was our busiest year to date with nearly a million visitors over three months.”

Jill Colvin – Head of Marketing & Communications

Sydney Festival was originally conceived by the Sydney Committee, the NSW State Government and the City of Sydney with a view to attracting people into the city centre during the holiday month of January. The first Festival took place in 1977 and it has since grown to become one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern programming.

More than any other cultural event, Sydney Festival defines Sydney’s personality. For over three decades we have presented international artists who guarantee headlines, and whose presence in Sydney adds to the Festival’s buzz and prestige. Names like Björk, Brian Wilson, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, Robert Lepage, Peter Sellars and Sir Ian McKellen.

Some of the world’s great companies - Netherlands Dance Theatre, Cheek by Jowl, Gate Theatre and the Schaubuhne Berlin to name only a few – share the Festival with the most exciting artists and companies in Australia.

Sydney Festival’s audacious contemporary programming positions it at the forefront of arts practice in Australia and up there with the great festivals of the world.

Sydney Festival attracts a total audience of approximately 1 million across all of its events each year making it the most attended cultural event in Australia.

Conexim Solution

Conexim was briefed on the requirements of Sydney Festival and needed to meet the intense seasonal demand of their website.

On the opening weekend, Sydney Festival experienced a massive demand from the public culminating in 15,000,000 hits fully supported by Conexim’s multiple Gigabit entry points to the network.

With the overwhelming response to Sydney Festival’s site, which attracted a load well beyond what was initially expected, Conexim’s flexible implementation handled the load seamlessly.

Conexim’s solution scales up and down for economies of scale at very short notice as we employ a highly redundant virtualised infrastructure powered by VMWare stored on Enterprise storage.

A solution that is fully monitored for performance and availability with a dedicated local contact who proactively advises on the capacity of the solution based on load.

A heavy e-commerce-driven site that supports fast loading. This allowed for a consistent user experience handling hundreds of simultaneous transactions across multiple load balanced virtual machines.
