What is a Webname?

A webname, (also known as a domain name) is an address used to identify and locate computers and web pages on the Internet.

A webname is hierarchical and often conveys information about the type of entity using the webname.

The site www.conexim.com.au implies that Conexim is an Australian commercial entity - which it is.

Webnames at the same level of the hierarchy must be unique.

You can think of a webname as your voice and presence on the Internet, a unique electronic address where your web site is hosted and you receive e-mail. Some people like to think of their webname as their cyber identity (.id.au webnames), cyber company (.com.au), cyber soap box (.asn.au/.org.au) or cyber networking solutions centre (.net.au).
