Data Traffic

What is 'traffic'?

Traffic, data transfer, and sometimes also called "bandwidth", refers to the amount of data that is used when visitors view your website. When visitors browse your website, they are technically requesting and retrieving files from the server. If you have a web page that consists of an HTML file and an image file that are 20kb each, then the amount of data transfer that is used when a single visitor views that web page is 40kb.

Other factors contribute to the amount of data transfer. These are the amount of FTP upload/download done to the site and the size of emails going through the account.

Making sense of all the traffic that comes from your website can be an important task. Knowing where people came from over the Internet to view your site can help you corner your target audience.

Traffic allowance

Each month you are allocated a certain amount of traffic, depending on the plan you are on. If you are exceeding that allowance by a small amount, there is no problem. If the quota is exceeded by a considerable amount, other options need to be considered – such us: paying for the excess traffic, upgrading to a higher-level hosting plan or taking up our triple data D3 add-on.

Data pricing model

The data pricing model for dedicated servers and co-location accounts is available on our data charges page. This does not apply to shared hosting accounts.
