Application & Web Server Clusters

In order to meet scalability and reliability requirements, application and website developers must often use multiple machines to run an application or serve the same pages. Such an installation with several servers is called a cluster.

Below is a simplified diagram of a basic server cluster:

There are many considerations that need to be taken into account when designing/deploying and maintaing such a cluster. Those are tightly related to the application than needs to run, its environment (operating system, database, etc), session persistance, redundancy, security, scalability and more.
